Chybucca Sounds - July 11th, 2011
Concept albums – or in this case a
‘concept EP’ – are almost a forgotten art in an era of
digital downloads; as fans are able to pick and choose
at will, without experiencing a collection of tracks in
the order that the artist intended them to be consumed.
Revenant, however, not only embraces the idea of a
linked collection of tracks, but it also shows Threefold
Law to be something more complex than your average
doom-come-metal assault. Based on the story of a desert
traveller in fourth century Persia, this ambitious
release is interlinked by mystic and spiritually; with
each track representing one quarter of the classical
elements.
With Sabbath at its core, the Ohio ensemble also
incorporates the likes of Cathedral and Trouble into
their old school sound, without sounding dated; and
while this polished EP is rife with meaty hooks and
juicy riffs, Revenant is at its best when the band
follows their complex, transcendental path.
