Sludgelord - August 9th, 2011

THREEFOLD LAW are a Progressive Stoner/Sludge/Doom Metal Band from Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

THREEFOLD LAW play an excellent hybrid blend of Stoner/Sludge Metal with influences taken from Psych, Thrash, Doom as well for good measure.

THREEFOLD LAW have been around a while now and have released two EP’s – “The Rede” and “The Burning Time” - . The band released these EP’s last year in an album called MMX on a USB stick to critical acclaim.

I heard both of these EP’s a while back and was highly impressed by the band’s talent and vision on what they were trying to achieve. Now the guys are back with their excellent 2011 album “Revenant”. What you get is 5 tracks that run for 33 mins in total.

Don’t let the short running time fool you this album is epic in scope and nature. As it’s a concept album about according to Heavy Planet Stoner Rock. I can't argue with that as I am still trying to get my head round it. But more of that later.

"A man traveling alone through the desert in fourth century Persia realizes he may not reach the next kingdom alive. He sets up camp and eats the last of his rations. Before going to sleep, he smokes a pipe of hashish. Unsure whether he is asleep or awake, the man is visited by the spirit of a dead Sultan. The two engage in conversation as the man attempts to find out what lies beyond life."

The album is split into five chapters – Earth, Air, Interlude, Fire and Water.

First thing that draws you to this album is the beautiful and highly original album cover. The guys have created a superb concept album. Plus James Thorn has written a superb story to back up each of the songs which you can check here.

This is indeed a concept album that Mastodon would be rightly proud to call their own.

I don’t really want to do a track-by-track review, as you need to check this highly original experience yourself. Both musically and literally especially with the wonderful words on show on the band’s official website. And in a top-notch booklet which you get with the album.

The guys play a multitude of styles of music on this masterpiece – Stoner, Sludge, Thrash, Psych, Doom and even Desert Rock.

They really do blend all of the above genres and styles into something special. Especially when they add some really cool and mystical Eastern ambient noises to the proceedings as well.

This is Threefold Law’s strongest work to date. And shows a band at the start of their creative powers. These guys could really be one of the next big players in the Stoner/Sludge Metal Scene.

These guys share a lot of similarities with SLEESTAK. Both making great Stoner/Sludge Metal Music around a superb story filled with rich narratives that you have to discover for yourself. Both releasing amazing new concept albums as well.

One listen won’t do this superb album justice. I have listened to at a dozen times and I am still discovering new weird and wonderful things I have missed previously. When you do find something new, it feels like you have found another piece to this amazing music puzzle. A puzzle that is called Revenant.

This album is getting high praise all over the Stoner/Sludge Metal scene. And it’s hard not to see why. Production is superb from start to finish. The album is full of amazing guitar riffs in a wide range of genres that will leave you begging for more.

Quite simply a truly original landmark album that will be in many people’s Top 10 Lists of 2011. And yes, it has made my top 10 list. No doubt about that.

2011 has been a great year for Stoner/Sludge/Post-Metal Music. Especially with releases by V.Y.G.R, Borracho, Sleestak and now Threefold Law. Bands that have made probably their most defining work to date.
